How to make DIY Collage Valentines out of old magazines
Let’s talk about grown-up Valentines. You’re too old to send cutout cartoon cards to your class, but long for the nostalgia of pink doily’s and conversation hearts. How can you honor this tradition without buying into a big-box commercial scheme, but still revel in the lighthearted joy of spreading love in February?
We’ll show you how to create lasting memories among new friends and reignite sentimental bonds with old friends by sending thoughtful, sustainable DIY Collage Valentines greetings using items you already have lying around your own home.
Here’s what you’ll need:
A couple of old magazines
Scissors
Marker or pens
Glue stick or Permanent double sided tape
Some sturdy paper and envelopes
Step 1)
Make sure you have everyone’s correct address. Send a text to your valentines, or better get start a mysterious group chat, asking for their coordinates. Pro Tip: save their addresses in each of their phone contacts for when their birthdays come around!
Step 2)
Flip through your magazine until you find a full-page face shot. Beauty brands are known for their oversized close ups, so pick one with a striking expression and cut out one of the models eyes. Extra points for editorial make up or exotic eye colors.
Step 3)
Keep flipping until you find a page full of a warm color or interesting texture. Interiors with accent walls, vast landscapes, anything with a striking hue. Rip out the page, fold it in half long-ways (hot dog!) and cut out a big heart.
Step 4)
It’s time to glue or tape down your cutouts and assemble your collage! Place the eye at the top of the page, the heart at the center, and leave space at the bottom to finish your composition…
Step 5)
Take your markers and pick out a color that compliments both your eye and heart cutouts. In your best penmanship, complete the sentiment and scribble down the word “you”.
On the inside you can write a heartfelt note, something you don’t tell this friend enough that they need to hear, or you can be totally silly with puns and dad jokes. It’s up to you! Either way, don’t forget to sign it! Feel free to more collage flourishes from the magazine, paper scraps cut into fun shapes, stickers and more! The more personalized the better.
These days when you open up your mailbox, you’re usually greeted by a bland stack if dreaded bills and generic coupons. Maybe there’s a clunky cardboard box containing some household necessity you recently ordered, but the thrill of opening the package and deploying it to its intended use is short lived. A chic homemade DIY Collage Valentine straight from your heart is sure to make anyones day, so grab your materials and get to snipping!
Love,
Kaitlin
